EDUCATIONAL VIRTUAL TRAIN RIDE WITH NCR
In past years, the team from Northern Central Railway of York would visit the Elementary schools of Southern York County School District to present an educational show and tell of the local railroad history. NCR did not want the 5th grade class of 2021 to miss out on this experience, so the team adapted the presentation. In September of 2020, NCR worked with the NCR historian and Conductor, Barry Larkin, to produce the first NCR virtual train ride. The crew stopped along 11 historical locations along the tracks to highlight unique local history. The 5th graders learned about the limestone rocks along the trail, Abraham Lincoln’s stop at Hanover Junction, and about the founders of their communities of New Freedom and Glen Rock.
After the video was viewed, NCR hosted a live Q&A session with over 190 5th graders to answer their questions. We discussed everything from the famous Glen Rock Carolers to the history of the cannons located at Hanover Junction. The students were fully engaged in learning about their local community history and excited to meet an official Conductor.
