Northern Central Railway of York announces purchase of 80-ton locomotive

The 80-ton locomotive, which was purchased from McHugh Locomotive Equipment, will be used to power excursions that will entertain and educate, NCR said.

NEW FREEDOM, Pa. — Northern Central Railway of York on Monday announced the purchase of a GE 80-ton diesel locomotive that it says “will be used to power excursions that educate, entertain and enlighten guests of all ages.”

The locomotive, which was purchased from McHugh Locomotive & Equipment, was previously rebuilt for the U.S. Army and used at the Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, NCR said in a press release.

“As part of our strategic growth plan, we have been considering buying another train for some time,” said NCR executive director Ashley Zimmerman. “The GE 80-ton diesel locomotive, which we have numbered 32, will allow us to continue offering fun and memorable experiences for our community members and tourists.”

In addition to the GE 80-ton diesel locomotive, NCR owns an 1860s-replica steam locomotive, an authentic Pennsylvania Railroad 1959 diesel engine and eight passenger cars.

McHugh Locomotive & Equipment delivered the locomotive from the Letterkenny Army Depot to the Northern Central Railway of York by truck last week. Ann and JC McHugh kindly donated a unique Hancock air whistle, which will be installed onto the train, NCR said.

“We are passionate about supporting nonprofit, heritage railroads and it has been a pleasure to work with Northern Central Railway of York to complete this transaction,” McHugh Locomotive & Equipment said. “We cannot wait to see all the fantastic and family-centered excursions that the GE 80-ton diesel locomotive will get to be a part of.”
